Interview with RABBI NAFTALI BRAWER - January 2024

Tufts University Jewish Chaplin and Hillel Executive Director

Oliver: What is your experience with being a Jew at Tufts?

Rabbi Naftali Brawer: Before the war Jews were extremely comfortable, people wore kippot and never encountered any discomfort. After the war started, there were many anti-Israel demonstrations, and a lot of language that crossed the line, but many Jewish celebrations on campus still take place.

Oliver: How large is the Jewish community there?

Rabbi Naftali Brawer: There are about 1,000 Jewish people within the community of around 13,000 undergraduates. Each year the Jewish population continues to rise.

Oliver: Have you felt a change in attitudes about Jewish people in your community since the start of the war?

Rabbi Naftali Brawer: Many Jewish students have often mentioned that they are nervous about being a Jew on campus, and they are truly upset with the constant feeling of discomfort showing their religion.

Oliver: Do you use any strategies to combat antisemitism, both in the past few months and throughout your life? Have you shifted any of your strategies?

Rabbi Naftali Brawer: I strive to model an open and joyful Jewish community. During services on Friday nights, more than 25% of the people in attendance are not Jewish. I believe it is hard to hate something that you see happen, and it is important to expose non-Jews to Judaism. It is important to emphasize that not all Jews are pro-Israel.

Oliver: How do you educate people about what is happening?

Rabbi Naftali Brawer: To educate more students throughout the spring semester we have different resources to share with those on campus. Here are links to the resources. https://hillel.tufts.edu/explore-culture-and-heritage/gesher-building-bridges/ and https://hillel.tufts.edu/critical-conversations-an-israel-education-series/

Oliver: Is there anything else you would like to add that we have not touched on?

Rabbi Naftali Brawer: The loudest voices get the most attention but the middle voices need to be heard. You cannot be protected from the world, but everyone has to be aware and have their own opinions. It’s important to educate yourself about Jewish history and if you are a Jew, live a proud life.

Oliver: Thank you so much!
